Real leather you can check for yourself. The body is genuine cowhide with a pebbled grain that hides small scuffs. The tote is unlined, so inside you see the raw, suede-like reverse of the same hide, with a leather Made in Italy tag on the zip pocket. Tone, grain and scent vary a little from hide to hide, signs of natural leather. Soft from day one, it grows softer with use.

Tall on purpose, so picture the size on you. It stands 14.4 inches tall, 11 wide and 4.7 deep and weighs 1.4 lb, so on a petite frame it reads as a big bag. A 16-inch laptop goes in upright or sideways and the bag still closes over it, with room for a book, wallet, water bottle, umbrella and makeup bag. Add a sleeve to protect the laptop; closing the bag over a sleeve is untested. The zip pocket hangs near the top, so small things stay within reach.

Relaxed by design. The unstructured body slouches into a relaxed shape when you set it down, empty or packed, on a flat base. The tone-on-tone top zipper stops about 2 inches short of each end, part of the design, with a leather tie on each side.

Made for the hand and the crook of the arm. Two thin rolled handles with an 18-inch drop are reinforced and sewn to the inside of the walls, keeping the front clean. On a slimmer frame with a lighter load, it also goes over the shoulder. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
